When Biology Isn't Destiny: Implications for the Sexuality of Women Without Children

Despite recent changes in the role options available to many women, a strong link between sexuality, maternity, and womanhood continues to be reinforced within most cultures throughout the world. Irrespective of women's other life accomplishments and creative labours, motherhood is still considered by many to be the hallmark of mature womanhood_a symbol of women's ultimate destiny and fulfillment. The implications of this maternal imperative for the sexual self-esteem and agency of heterosexual women without children are explored in this paper. Four recommendations are made for working with the increasing number of women who, for reasons of choice or circumstances, do not become mothers.

Malgré les récents changements concernant les divers rôles disponibles aux femmes, le renforcement d'un lien fort entre la sexualité, la maternité et la féminité existe toujours dans la plupart des cultures du monde entier. Quels que soient les autres accomplissements et travaux créatifs des femmes, la maternité est toujours considérée par beaucoup comme la marque de la féminité mûre - le symbole de la destinée ultime de la femme et de son épanouissement. Dans cet article, l'auteur examine les implications de ces obligations de maternité pour l'estime de soi sexuelle et le sentiment de puissance sexuelle des femmes hétérosexuelles sans enfants. Quatre recommandations sont offertes pour travailler avec le nombre croissant de femmes qui, pour des raisons de choix ou de circonstances, ne sont pas devenues mères.

The Interpersonal Exchange Model of Sexual Satisfaction: Implications for Sex Therapy with Couples

Although much has been written about the treatment of sexual dysfunction and sexual dissatisfaction, the enhancement of sexual satisfaction has received little attention in either the empirical or clinical literature. Most of the literature on sexual satisfaction that does exist has lacked a definition of the construct. In addition, until recently, there has not been a theoretical model to guide either research or our understanding of factors influencing sexual satisfaction. In order to fill these gaps, Lawrance and Byers (1995) developed and established the validity of the Interpersonal Exchange Model of Sexual Satisfaction (IEMSS). This article first discusses issues related to defining sexual satisfaction and proposes a definition of the construct. Second, the exchange perspective in general and the IEMSS in particular are described. Third, the results of studies which have validated the IEMSS with Canadians in long-term relationships, Canadians in dating relationships, and married individuals living in China are presented. Finally, the implications of the IEMSS for clinical practice are elaborated.

Bien qu'on ait beaucoup écrit sur le traitement des dysfonctions sexuelles et du manque de satisfaction sexuelle, l'accroissement de la satisfaction sexuelle a reçu peu d'attention, soit dans la littérature empirique ou clinique. La plupart des écrits sur la satisfaction sexuelle qui existent ne possèdent pas de définition du construct. De plus et jusqu'à une époque récente, il n'existait pas de modèle théorique pouvant diriger la recherche ou notre compréhension des facteurs déterminant la satisfaction sexuelle. Afin de combler ces lacunes, Lawrance et Byers (1995) ont conçu le modèle suivant et en ont établi la validité : Interpersonal Exchange Model of Sexual Satisfaction (IEMSS) [Modèle d'échange interpersonnel de satisfaction sexuelle]. Cet article discute premièrement des questions liées à la définition de la satisfaction sexuelle et propose une définition du construct. Deuxièmement, la perspective d'échange en général et le modèle IEMSS en particulier sont décrits. Troisièmement, cet article présente les résultats des études vérifiant la validité du IEMSS chez des Canadiens engagés dans des relations à long terme, chez des Canadiens dans les relations pré-conjugales et chez des personnes mariées vivant en Chine. Finalement, les implications du IEMSS pour la pratique clinique sont énumérées.

Responding to Sexual Harassment: Implications for Counselling Adolescent Girls

The purpose of this study was to outline the processes involved in adolescent girls' responding to sexual harassment. Grounded theory methodology was used to generate a theory of these processes. The core category elicited from interviews with ten participants was "learning about the self." Two processes were identified: "learning powerlessness" and "learning agency." These processes represented girls' movement from seeing themselves as "objects" of others' experience to becoming the "subjects" of their own experience. The counselling implications of the theory developed in the study are discussed.

Le but de cette étude est de mettre en valeur les processus engagés lors de la réaction des adolescentes face à l'harcèlement sexuel. On a utilisé une méthodologie de théorie à base empirique pour élaborer une théorie de ces processus. La catégorie de base ressortant des entrevues avec dix participantes s'intitule « Apprendre sur soi-même ». Deux processus ont été identifiés : « Apprendre l'impuissance » et « Apprendre le sentiment de puissance ». Ces processus représentent le chemin parcouru par des jeunes filles allant du stade de se voir comme « objets » des expériences des autres à celle de devenir les « sujets » de leurs propres expériences. Les implications de counseling découlant de la théorie élaborée dans cette étude sont discutées.

Searching for Support and Community: Experiences in a Gay Men's Psyhcoeducational Group

Support groups are a powerful tool that can assist gay men in dealing with isolation from other gay men, a lack of information about themselves and others as gay men, and the fear either of being identified or of self-identifying as gay. In this article, ten gay men speak about their experiences in a support/psychoeducational group.

Les groupes de soutien constituent un outil puissant qui peut aider les gais à remédier à leur isolement vis-à-vis des autres hommes homosexuels d'une part et au manque de renseignements portant sur les hommes homosexuels et pouvant les intéresser d'autre part. Ces groupes de soutien peuvent les aider également à faire face à leur peur d'être identifiés ou de s'identifier comme gai. Dans cet article, dix hommes parlent de leur expérience dans un groupe de soutien psychopédagogique.

Experiential Interventions for Clients with Genital Herpes

Prevalent counselling approaches for individuals with genital herpes have primarily focused on short-term individual and group interventions to reduce stress levels and increase coping strategies for dealing with the disease. This article explores the potential benefits of incorporating concepts and interventions from experiential therapy to help clients deal with the more psychosocial difficulties in learning to live with this disease. Experiential counselling interventions of two-chair dialogue, empty chair, and metaphor are suggested for helping clients work through the emotional sequelae of genital herpes. A case illustration is presented of a young, female, Korean, university student who received 18 sessions of counselling which focused on dealing with the psychosocial aspects of the disease.

Les approches de counseling courantes pour les individus souffrant d'herpès génital se sont surtout concentrées sur des interventions individuelles ou de groupe, à court terme. Ces interventions avaient pour but de réduire les niveaux de stress et d'élargir les stratégies d'adaptation pour affronter cette maladie. Cet article explore les bénéfices éventuels pouvant résulter de l'incorporation des concepts et interventions provenant de la thérapie expérientielle afin d'aider les clients à s'ajuster aux difficultés psychosociales d'apprendre à vivre avec cette maladie. Il est suggéré d'employer des interventions de counseling expérientielles consistant en des dialogues avec deux chaises, la chaise vide et des métaphores pour aider les clients à surmonter les séquelles émotionnelles de l'herpès génital. Un cas illustré est présenté concernant une jeune femme coréenne, étudiante d'université ayant reçu 18 séances de counseling se concentrant sur les aspects psychosociaux de cette maladie.

The Role Healthy Sexuality Plays in Modifying Abusive Behaviours of Adolescent Sex Offenders: Practical Considerations for Professionals

This paper highlights an approach that guides adolescents who have committed sexual offences to learn healthy/prosocial ways to meet their sexual needs. This paper is divided into an overview of literature, review of the sex education component of an intervention program for adolescent sex offenders, and a discussion on the practical considerations for professionals working with adolescent sex offenders. The information has a direct applicability to professionals working with adolescent sex offenders or with non-offending youths. Themes of healthy lifestyle and healthy choices are stressed.

Cet article a pour sujet une approche guidant des adolescents ayant commis des infractions sexuelles vers une pratique de comportements sains et prosociaux pour satisfaire leurs besoins sexuels. L'article est divisé en trois sections : survol de la littérature, révision de la composante constituée par l'éducation sexuelle dans un programme d'intervention destiné aux délinquants sexuels adolescents, ainsi qu'une discussion sur les considérations pratiques auxquelles doivent faire face les professionnels travaillant avec ces adolescents. Les informations concernent directement les professionnels travaillant avec des délinquants sexuels adolescents ou avec des jeunes non-délinquants. Une place particulière est accordée aux thèmes d'un style de vie et de choix sains.
